About DAV Institutions at Solapur.


          Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College Trust and Management Society, New Delhi established DayanandCollege of Arts & Science, Solapur on 17th June 1940 to celebrate the victory of Satyagraha launched by Arya Samaj in Hyderabad Mukti Sangram, to cater the Higher education needs of population of this region of Maharashtra and also of the surrounding areas of Karnataka and Andhra states bordering this region. It is one of the oldest and renowned educational institutions in this part of our country and by that acquires heritage status.Presently DAV management administers about 15 Institutions in Maharashtra- in Mumbai, Pune and Solapur of which 9 are in Solapur(6 Colleges {4 Senior + 2 Junior} + 3 Schools). Except Model school all are Government aided.

          In the beginning, the college was affiliated to BombayUniversity. However, with the establishment of PoonaUniversity, it came under its jurisdiction and then it was affiliated to ShivajiUniversity, Kolhapur since its inception (1964) and since July 2004, it is affiliated to SolapurUniversity, Solapur.

Dayanand Institutions of Solapur are spread over an area of 63 acres of land with impressive and magnificent buildings for classrooms, libraries, science laboratories, museums, vast playground, open air theatre ( Muktangan) and two separate Hostels- one for Boys with 300 capacity and one for Ladies with 60 capacity.

A galaxy of visionary, meritorious and dedicated Local Secretary cum Principals of Arts and Science college and all other Principals, Headmasters, staff and students of various colleges and schools have contributed to the growth and glory of all Dayanand Institutions of Solapur. Prin. G.L. Datta, a great Physicist, was the founder Principal, who served the college from 1940 to 1943. Prin. Suraj Bhan succeeded him and served the college from 1943 to 1946. Prin. Shriram Sharma, an eminent Historian, served the college from 1946 to 1960. During his tenure, D.A.V.VelankarCollege of Commerce( 1952) R.J. Highschool, Karkamb,Tahsil-Pandharpur, District- Solapur(1954), D.P.B. Dayanand Eucation College(1955) and D.K.AsawaHigh School (1959) were founded. Prin. Bhagwan Das, an eminent Mathematician, served the college from 1960 to 1965. During his tenure, DayanandEveningLawCollege (1964) was founded. Prin. J.N. Dudeja served from 1965 to 1972. From 1972 Prin. C.L. Arora a great Physicist took over and continued up to 1977. Prin. Dev Raj Gupta an eminent Philosopher succeeded him in 1977. He served as the Principal up to 1983 and occupied the independent chair as Local Secretary of Dayanand Institutions till 2008. During his tenure 2 junior colleges- one of Arts and science and one of Commerce college (1977),Pushpa Model school(1981) were established. Dr. Satish K. Kapoor an ex British Scholar and eminent Historian served from 19thOctober 2008 to 30thNovember 2012. Now Honourable Dr. V.K. Sharmaji an eminent management administrator has chaired from 1stDecember2012.

Dr. N.G. Zunjurwad from 1983 to 1992, Dr. M.K. Zambare from 1993 to 1998, Dr. N.S. Dhayagude from 1998 to 2008 served as the Principals of the Arts and Prin. T.B. Narsimhachari served the CommerceCollege from 1952 to 1984. Dr. V.G. Bansude from 1984 to 2003, Sh. R.G. Deshpande (In charge) from 2003 to 2004, Dr. S.M. Aherkar from 2004 to 2005, Mrs. Dr. Rathi from 2005 to 2010 and Dr. Gavai A.K. from 2010 to 2012 served as the Principals of the College. Presently Mrs. Dr. Lata Yajmanya is In charge principal.

Dr. K.S. Mardikar served the Education College from 1955 to 1981. Sh. M.R. Kamatkar from 1981 to 1991, Sh. R.C. Kalase from 1991 to 2000, Dr. H.N. Jagtapfrom 2000 to 2010 served as the Principals of the Education College. Since 2010 Dr. Kshirsagar S.B. is the Principal of the college.

Barrister M.S. Jamadar served the LawCollege from 1964 to 1967. Sh. Moholkar from 1967 to 1979,Sh. Potdar (In charge Principal) from 1979 to 1981, Mrs. C.R. Deshpande from 1981 to 1999, Dr. H.G. Kulkarni from 2000 to 2010 served as the Principals of the Law College.Since 2010 Dr. U. M. Rao is the Principal of the college.

There are about 7600 students on the rolls of all the four colleges of Dayanand Institutions.

The Arts & Science College offers degree courses as B.A/B.Sc. and Post graduation as M.A./M.Sc. The college – Junior and Senior - hastotal 27 departments - 14 in Arts and 13 in Science including interdisciplinary. It runs Self-financing (non-aided) P.G. Courses in Arts faculty in English, Geography and History and in Science faculty in Physical Chemistry, Botany andZoology subjects. The college offers a self-financing (non-aided) degree course- BSC in Computer Science and Degree courses in B.Lib and M.Lib. of YCMOU, Nasik. It offers Minimum Competency Courses (MCVC) to help students to seek self-employment. The Bi-Focal Electronics and Computer Science Courses are also offered for Junior College (HSC) students.

The Commerce College offers degree course in B.Com. and post graduation in M.Com. and a two-year self financing (non-aided) MBA Course and degree course in B.C.A.

The Education College offers a teacher-training degree course B.Ed and post graduation as M.Ed.An Extension Services Centre, a Study Centre for running vocational B.Ed. / M.Ed.Courses, DSM course and a Distance Education Centre of YCMOU Nasik are also available.

The Law College offers a Three Year and Five Year Law Course after H.S.C as LL.B. (special) and LLM course. A number of practising advocates and legal experts are visiting faculties to guide the students.

All the colleges of Dayanand Institutions have excelled in academic, sports and cultural activities. A number of students have secured meritorious position in various university examinations, civil services examinations, sports and cultural events. Dayanand Institutions have produced renowned scholars, academicians, administrators, scientists, creative artists, businessmen and politicians.

Law College has been re accreditated. Others are in process of re accreditation.

All the colleges have a highly qualified and dedicated teaching staff. There are 6 Departments as Research Centres (in Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Geography, History and English) and 7 Departments as research spaces (in Geology, Physics, Electronics, Microbiology, A.I.H.C., Economics and Marathi) in Arts and Science College, 2 Departments as research spaces ( in English and Economics) in Commerce College, Education college and Law College as research Centres arerecognized by Solapur University, where Staff and students can do research activities leading to Ph.D. and/or M.Phil. degrees.

About 50% of total staff members areresearch guides for M.Phil and Ph.D under whom students have enrolled.

The central library is one of the oldest and biggest libraries in the university area.

Keeping pace with modernisation it has maintained an ever growing collection of text books, reference books, periodicals, journals, encyclopaedias and cd’s. The INFLIBNET- Internet facilities are also available.

In concurrence with the noble aims and objectives of Dayanand Institutions, the Dharma-Shiksha Education Curriculum is introduced for the benefit of students.

Havans and Prayers are conducted in the campus.

The Arts & Science College has established itself as a centre of academic excellence by securing an honour of College with potential for excellence from UGC, New Delhi.

All colleges avail the routine as well special grants in form of minor and major projects, for conduct of seminars etc. from UGC, New Delhi and other funding agencies.

The administration of Dayanand Institutions is clean, transparent and efficient. The teaching and non teaching staffs are hard working, dedicated and sincere in their duties and all are loyal to the Dayanand Institutios – authorities and Management. All staff enjoys full cooperation from the management in the discharge of duties. The decision-making has always been directional rather than restrictive. The Heads of all Institutions enjoy full functional autonomy in routine administration and regular activities. Personal dignity and liberty of all the teaching and non-teaching employees is always honoured and no financial obligation is levied upon them. The Local Managing Committee and the Local Advisory Committee guide and help the Local Secretary in routine matters of the Institutions.

       The DAV CMC manages 4 senior colleges, 2 junior colleges and 3 high-schools in solapur. Dr. V. K. Sharma is the administrator governing all this 9 institutions. Dr. V. K. Sharma, as the Local Secretory, is the cheif administrator of all the institutions in solapur region. The Heads of all Institutions enjoy full functional autonomy in routine administration and regular activities.
